The Union referred to the United States of America and specifically to the national government of president Abraham Lincoln and the 23 free states and 5 border states that supported it. The union was fighting to free the slaves from southern states and their size was about 2'200'000 soldiers.

After war
The Union victory in the Civil War in 1865 gave to about 4 million slaves their freedom. After the war the Union started a process of reconstruction in the Southern states.

Confederacy
The Confederacy was an unrecognized breakaway country of 11 secessionist slave states existing from 1861 to 1865 in the lower South region of the United States whose regional economy was mostly dependent upon agriculture, particularly cotton, and a plantation system that relied upon the labor of African -American slaves. The Confederacy was fighting to keep slavery in their area because that was the base of their economy and their size was about 750'000-1'000'000 soldiers.

After war
After the war the Confederate states had a series of significant changes. Under the administration of President Andrew Johnson in 1865 and 1866, new southern state legislatures passed restrictive “black codes” to control the labor and behavior of former slaves and other African Americans.
